Community invited to free Summer Skills Share Day at Tooting Bec Common
Tooting, South London — Residents across the capital are being invited to take part in a free, family-friendly day of practical learning and community connection as the London Hub’s Summer Skills Share Day returns on Saturday 8 June 2025.
Hosted by Transition Tooting, the event will take place at Tooting Bec Common, near the café (SW16 1JJ), from 11am to 4pm. Organisers say the day is designed to bring together local people and Transition initiatives from across London to share skills focused on sustainability, resilience and community action.
Visitors can expect a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, with a range of hands-on workshops, demonstrations and advice stalls running throughout the day.
Workshops and activities
The programme includes a variety of practical sessions aimed at helping people reduce waste, grow their own food and cut energy use at home.
- Clothing repair workshop (11am–1pm): Volunteers from Transition Tooting’s Share & Repair project will offer guidance on basic sewing and mending techniques.
- Seed saving demonstration (11am–12pm): Transition Leytonstone will show how to collect and store seeds from home-grown plants.
- Energy advice stall (all day): Free information on improving home energy efficiency and accessing grants will be available from Transition Ilford and Transition Kingston.
- Pedal Power demonstration (12pm–3pm): Transition IG3 will showcase a cycle-powered energy system, giving visitors a chance to generate electricity themselves.
- Food growing Q&A (2pm–3pm): Experts will answer questions on container gardening, no-dig methods and getting started with growing food.
A community lunch will take place from 1pm to 2pm, with attendees encouraged to bring a dish to share.
Open to all
The event is free to attend and no booking is required. Families and children are especially welcome, with activities suitable for all ages.
Organisers say the Skills Share Day is part of a wider effort to strengthen local networks and empower communities to take practical steps towards a more sustainable future.
